Watching two-year-olds jump: video method becomes ‘haptic’

چکیده
This article explores emerging findings in a sensory ethnography based nursery setting where video data has been co-produced with parents, practitioners and 2-year-old children. The project mobilises Froebel’s twin concepts of ‘unfoldment’ ‘self-activity’, reinstating the importance sensory-motor register as form knowledge production. It maps some interesting affinities between aspects thinking Deleuzian philosophy movement sensation. Focussing on proprioception felt-sense bodies motion, we discuss video-based methodology that allows us to experiment new ways attending actions 2-year-olds. Slowing speed complicates ocular conceptions sight often associated ethnographic observation. We propose instead practices watching - attentiveness kinaesthetic receptiveness, vision becomes ‘haptic’. confine ourselves here jumping bodies, making sense of/with event jump within attention.

Haptic interaction has for a long time been a promise that has not fully been realized in everyday technology due to several reasons. Already for more than 20 years the research community in the field of human-technology interaction has identified multimodal interaction as a potential next mainstream interaction paradigm to replace graphical user interfaces. A U.S. consumer watches TV for about five hours a day on average. While the majority of viewed content is still the broadcast TV programming, the share of the time‐shifted content has been ever increasing. One third of the U.S. consumers currently use a digital video recorder (DVR)‐like device for time‐shifting, however, the trends are showing that more and more consumers are going to the Web t...
متن کاملWhy do four - year - olds show poor cross - modal transfer between haptic and vision ?
Four year olds have difficulty transferring information from the haptic to the visual modality. This difficulty may reflect qualitative differences in haptic and visual object representations or children’s inability to obtain the same kinds of perceptual information in the two modalities. Twenty 4year-olds explored novel objects either haptically or visually, then haptically chose a match from ...
متن کاملTwo-year-olds appreciate the dual nature of pictures.
Paintings and drawings are both symbolic representations and material objects—da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is at the same time a woman with an enigmatic smile and a canvas covered with strokes of paint. This duality, long recognized and studied by philosophers, psychologists, and artists (Bloom & Markson, 1998; Gombrich, 1960; Ittelson, 1996), may be difficult for children to understand. Young children...
متن کاملTwo-year-olds grasp the intentional structure of pretense acts.
Twenty-two- and 27-month-old children were tested for their understanding of pretending as a specific intentional action form. Pairs of superficially similar behaviors - pretending to perform an action and trying to perform that action - were demonstrated to children. The 27-month-olds, and to some degree the 22-month-olds, showed in their responses that they understood the intentional structur...
